Ash Wednesday. Lent arrives today with its usual air of solemnity.
We borrowed the word “solemn†from a Latin term used to describe Roman liturgical events. In what appears to be an impressive display of Biblical literacy, hundreds of web sites substitute “solomonly†for “solemnly.†Are they thinking of Solomon the wise and solemn judge, Solomon the claimed author of hundreds of humorless proverbs? Or are they bypassing the Hebrew stories to touch on the hapless Solomon Grundy, “born on a Monday, christened on Tuesday, married on Wednesday, took ill on Thursday, worse on Friday, died on Saturday, buried on Sunday, this is the [solemn] end of Solomon Grundy.”
Examples:
Web fantasy fiction: “Everbreeze mewed solomonly to the tom.â€
1887 marriage certificate: “[the couple] were solomonly united by me in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony at the Bride’s parents home…â€
UFO sighting testimony: “I solomonly sware that I can’t account for this visual sightening based on any of my life’s experiences.â€

There are a good few return-journeyers but they look like typos and lack conviction.
Now lets look at the queen of the south who traveled to hear the wisdom of Solomn.
An early Lehman, perhaps, before his first appearance in a children’s rhyme in 1842 Solomon Grundy had been an eggy salad called Salmagundi. Hannah Glasse called it Salamangundy in her 1747 cookery book, and it appears to have come from salmigondin which was coined, apparently, by Rabelais.

Obviously the Vatican believes the presence of guns would increase the possibility of violence, and they likely oppose the very idea of people carrying weapons at a holy and salaam occasion such as the pope’s funeral.
