Pointed out to me by my distinguished colleague, Maryanna Sullivan, M.D., it’s particularly eggcornish when the addition/edition in question is a real physical book. 400+ ghits:
... this well-edited volume is not only a remarkable edition to the literature on European eugenics but provides invaluable insights ...
By making these points clear, Oliver Zimmer has provided a welcome edition to the literature on national identity and it deserves to be read by any scholar …
Animals and Disease: An Introduction to the History of …an important edition to the literature of veterinary medicine and is not just for history buffs.
Health:EnGendering AIDS is the latest edition to the literature critiquing the way in which HIV/AIDS is constructed by words and images in public discourses.
Ken’s related post on addition/edition is here:
Yeah, here’s the one I just stumbled across on the ‘Net: “But while we’re waiting to purchase what will most likely be a treasured edition to our movie libraries…”. And I’d agree that the likelihood that it’s an actual eggcorn as opposed to just a substitution based on mishearing is much greater in these cases wherein the thing in question is something that actually comes in the form of editions, as with books or, in this case, DVDs.
