Cut to the "choice" for "chase"

“Andrew (yet another one)” over on Language Log, June 19, 2012 @ 8:13 am stumbled upon a select eggcorn that deserves recognition here: cut to the choice. It’s used to mean “get to the meat of it”, “get to the point”, and sometimes “get to the best part”. Like cut to the chase.

We get through the meandering sooner and cut to the choice a lot faster than we previously have.

(I’d think that would not be the thing to say to a girl on a movie date.) Cutting to the chest would certainly mean getting to the heart of the matter without further adieu.

O yes, what we need is brevity.

Waiting line to log in. I assume they want to curt to the chase and axe a huge number of servers and cram the reamining players into a handful …

On the other hand, tedium has its uses.

Let’s now cut to the chess and give an estimated figure to answer the question how much does invisalign cost in New York. The specialized and …

In fact I have no idea what they might be thinking on this one. Forget all the preliminaries and get right to the relaxation?

And let us not forget this proper – or is it improper – variety: permit me to cut to the chaste.

I’d forgotten that one, and I can see why. The atmosphere may have been a little less light-hearted in those days. More earnest, perhaps.
Leaving the chair, the unsullied and the upper torso, here’s a similar idiomatic misinterpretation, suggesting weary listeners impatiently awaiting a punchline:

To cut to the quip buy them when you see them would be my suggestion if the funds allow of course! Here in store at David Spruce we are still …

I cut to the quip and simply say that I’ve changed the brake and clutch reservoir pot lids with oberon billet in lieu of plastic…and that I’ve had the …

Oberon Billet car parts? A star of the silent screen, more like.
