"bondfire"

A colleague recently invited a group of co-workers to his house for a bondfire. He had been using this word for years, it turns out, because bonfire commonly means a “fire at an evening party, around which acquaintances bond with one another”.

Re: "bondfire"

Sounds like a genuine perp-confession of this beautiful (though previously reported ) eggcorn, complete with explanation of the rationale. Nice catch!

And welcome to the forum, Oakie!

fwiw, To check for previous mentions, go to the Eggcorn Database (not this Forum) homepage and choose the second search engine, the Google search. Look for both the acorn (the standard word or phrase) and the eggcorn. E.g. in this case I did searches for bonfire and bondfire (and bond fire as well). The reminders of the existence of bombfire, beach barn fire, bahn-fire and Bonn fire̱ were icing on the gravy.

Re: "bondfire"

Reminds me of the man (of Korean or Japanese origin, I believe) who lived with his family for a number of years near where we were in Arizona. They were about to move back to the East, and he was saying that he would miss Arizona. After all, he said, this was where his children had grown up and experienced their bondage.
