Bass and drums comprise the rhythm section of most bands, the function of which is to provide a rhythmic base upon which melodies and improvisations are laid down. An eggcorn, sez I—at least in some cases.

I can’t believe this one survived unscathed until now! I reasoned it out that way as a kid, quite probably before I could spell either one.
