Twice this last week (while in SC fwtw), I was talking to professionals about housebuilding, and specifically about what underpinnings are necessary or usual for a modular home or a log home. Both of them repeatedly used the word “cross-baseâ€, in sentences like “Well, you could put it directly on a slab, but that’s not usually recommended. You want to set it above a cross-base.â€

I got a clear picture of some kind of foundation wall running down the center of the long dimension of the building, with one or more shorter walls crossing it at right angles, the length of the shorter dimension.

Eventually it got clarified in my mind: they were saying “crawl-spaceâ€.
