Found in the wild today while mindlessly scrolling. Taking a gander apparently derives from the gooseneck nature of the goose’s neck, allowing it to have a really good look around. Taking a “gather” would be an intelligence gathering effort, I presume. About a dozen hits as “take/took a gather at”.
So, I went and, and I kind of took a gather at it.

“Th” for “nd” seems strange. But I can’t think what else could be behind the substitution. Unless it’s some metaphor based on taking up a gathering in garments.
