Because it’s long and stringy, tinsel will have a measurable tensile strength (but not much). 500+ ghits:

tinsel is also long, long and skinny—a similar shape to wires used for hooks, nylon fibers, or rayon fibers.
And “tensile” means relating to or involving tension-which you would create by grabbing both ends and pulling, right? The way you can with tenc-tinsel (geez, now I can’t even TYPE the word right!)
Some other examples don’t have that same “pull on both ends/long and stringy” vibe, but I vote this as an eggcorn.
