Since ‘abet’ now occurs almost exclusively within ‘aid and abet’ and hardly anyone recalls it’s meaning, it’s a fat target for modification. Of course, I don’t know what ‘abed’ means either. But a plausible guess would be ‘provide a bed for,’ used metonymically to mean ‘provide a place for,’ especially since it’s usually illegal imigrants and other undesirables who are seen as being abedded.
