I suppose it would be possible to be on a track which is not the beaten one, ‘off the beaten track’, as opposed to not being on any track or beat at all, ‘off the beat and track’, but I prefer a more musical interpretation of ‘beat’ which renders the eggcornish idiom a little more interesting. Whether those using it are entertaining this alternative imagery is another matter…
