'maul' for 'mull'

Even if I wanted to, with my dialect I could hardly criticise the way others mouth their Englishes. That said, when I heard someone talk about “mauling things over” I briefly yearned for the speech- certitudes of my early childhood. Then I remembered I was an eggcorn hunter and all was well again.
I must admit I’ve never really separated two of the senses of ‘mull’ and when sitting back and having a deliberate ruminate, a warming glass is never far from my hand. Anyway, rather than the gentle pondering of the original, there seems to be a more urgent and vigorous re-examination in the possibly eggcornish alternative…

Good eggcorn.

I prefer to mull things over while sipping a glass of mauled wine. (20 ughits). In the coming depression I may have to give up visits to the wine store and switch to malled wine (8 ughits). For the really perverse tastes there is always mold wine (earlier thread at http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=2313).

Moles are not the only beasts to grind away and work things over.

Both of us were taking some time to mule it over.

You take one little spark, some sort of inspiration, and ask yourself “what if?” You expand that little fragment and mule it over until it becomes a full-fledged story.

As I muddle it over, I worry. As I ponder, I get uptight.

I’ll muddle it over in my mind for a couple more days and then decide.

I tend toward just inner reflection….Give it some thought, muddle it over, and then let it pass….

Sometimes it helps if you just confuse it over in your mind.

Ah—I read “muddle” like what you do to fruit before pouring rum over it in my favorite cocktails.

Re: 'maul' for 'mull'

Mmm! Muddling things over your way can be a healthy, vitamin-rich strategy (including good ol’ vitamin EtOH) when faced with stressful situations.

Muddling things also makes sense as a kind of blend with “muddle through somehow.”
