Similarly, in holding a bodypart such as the neck or an arm or one’s back rigid, muscles and the tendons attached to them tend to stand out in ridges. If one thinks the physical stiffness is named for such prototypical cases involving ridges, the same spelling would of course be taken as the basis for the extended, figurative cases.
